George Floyd Remembrance Day
A letter from Phil
Team,
It was just a year ago that George Floyd was senselessly murdered by a Minneapolis police officer (Derek Chauvin). Officer Chauvin pinned Mr. Floyd to the ground for 9 minutes and 29 seconds with his knee pressed into Mr. Floyd’s neck. The nation watched in horror this slow, agonizing death and none of us will ever be the same.
In the aftermath of Mr. Floyd's murder, GumGum and our GumGummers came together in support of Black Americans by protesting, hosting fireside chats, giving donations and/or making a safe space for us to all express our feelings of frustration and outrage. Since then, we have watched our justice system work! The now-former police officer who committed this heinous act was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter last month. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25, and faces up to 30 years in prison.
Today, Tuesday May 25 at noon (in your respective time zones), we'd like to ask you to show your support by taking a moment of silence for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. We must continue to improve our understanding and show our support of all communities impacted by racial injustice. Let George Floyd's death not be in vain – instead, let's remember that his death galvanized a nation and the world more broadly.
Best,
Phil
