Homelessness in Global Majority Groups (UK)
Homelessness in Global Majority Groups in the UK
It is deeply troubling that there is such a significant over-representation of people who identify as non-white among individuals experiencing homelessness. In the UK, facts around homelessness state:
Black people are more than three times as likely to experience homelessness as white people in England and twice as likely in Scotland
People of Mixed Race are almost twice as likely to be affected by homelessness in England
All ethnic groups were more likely to experience housing disadvantages than White British groups
Bangladeshi, Black African, Black Other and Pakistani groups are more than twice as likely as White British people to experience housing disadvantage.
In December 2022, Heriot-Watt University’s Social Policy, Housing and Equalities Research (I-SPHERE), in partnership with Race on the Agenda, have released the first report of ‘Homelessness Amongst Black Minoritised Ethnic Communities in the UK: A Statistical Report on the State of the Nation.’
One key quote sums up the findings: “There is overwhelming statistical evidence that people from Black and minoritized ethnic communities, taken as a whole, experience disproportionate levels of homelessness in the UK.”
The Limehouse Registered Charity
The Limehouse Project (LHP) is a registered charity that has worked to respond to the needs of minority communities throughout the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for over 30 years.
They seek to empower marginalized individuals by researching, identifying, and establishing new pathways to help them overcome the personal and socio-economic barriers to self-empowerment, physical and mental well-being and the establishment of stable, fulfilled lives.
Hundreds of volunteers have dedicated their time, energy and expertise to improving the lives of thousands of local people and families who, whether due to poverty, social marginalisation or racial discrimination, often find themselves unable to access the help, support and guidance they need. The Limehouse Project was founded by three inspirational volunteers, so it is only fitting that volunteers continue to lie at the very heart of all we do.
As part of our Q2 Quarterly Homeless Cause, we would like to highlight and support Limehouse. Please head over to the LIMEHOUSE DONATE page. Please hold onto your donation confirmation and we pledge to match it!
