Pride Spotlight: JANET MOCK
JANET MOCK:
And for today’s Pride Month spotlight , let me proudly introduce Janet Mock. A New York Times bestselling author, Mock continues to make history as a writer, director, and advocate.
In 2018, Mock directed the episode of Pose titled “Love Is the Message”, thus making her the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an episode of television. For those who are not familiar with Pose, the show is set in the 1980's and explores the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York City, especially the world of ball culture. But most importantly, it’s a show about chosen family and what life can be like for LGBTQ+ youth. Mock also eventually got promoted to a producer on the show, another huge step in her career.
Most recently, she signed a three-year multimillion-dollar contract with Netflix, making her the first openly transgender woman of color to sign a deal with a major content company. Mock hopes that her creations will continue to “empower people and equip them to tell their own stories.”
