GG MX Celebrates Dia de los Muertos on the Xochimilco + Facts about the Holiday ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿ’€๐ŸŒน

Last week, the GumGum Mexico team got together for their first in-person Connect event to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos early by enjoying a trajinera (boat) ride down the Xochimilco. They enjoyed an afternoon tour that consisted of a brief history of the legends of the Xochimilco, food (chicken molรฉ ) and drinks, and a good time connecting and getting to know one another.

What is Dia de los Muertos and How is it celebrated?

Every year on November 1 and 2, families come together to honor and celebrate past family members on the Day of the Dead, more commonly known as Dรญa de Muertos. Itโ€™s a special time when beloved family members from the afterworld visit the land of the living to reunite with loved ones. Days before, families often prepare to welcome the lives of their deceased family members with vibrant decorations, traditional food, and music.

Today, Dรญa de Muertos is celebrated in Mexico, other Latin American countries and even the United States. Although customs vary by region, itโ€™s common to see families create an ofrenda (altar) for their loved ones. An ofrenda is often adorned in marigold flowers (a popular Day of the Dead flower), food, water, candles, personal items, a photo and more. From sugar skulls to papel picado, each custom carries a special meaning and significance for this beautiful celebration. So whether you celebrate this holiday each year or want to learn about these traditions, there is always something new to learn about this celebration that dates back 3,000 years with Indigenous roots.
